While many English majors may choose to pursue teaching, a person who is well-read and has excellent writing skills is valued in almost any profession.
An English degree emphasizes good communication, which the majority of employers highly value. Being able to speak and write clearly, accurately and concisely makes you more marketable and gives a competitive edge over candidates who are unable to do so.
There is no limit to job opportunities for English majors. Some of the more common include:
- Technical writer
- Public relations
- Grants and proposals
- Business administration
MCC offers a range of English electives to choose from including: news writing, creative writing, fiction, technical writing, poetry, screenwriting and numerous literature courses. Classes help you explore different writing styles and learn to identify and understand major works of literature.
While MCC does not offer a degree in this field, these lower division (freshman/sophomore level) courses move with you to a four year college or university and depending on your chosen major may apply toward your degree or as an elective. Check with your transfer school and your MCC academic advisor for the most accurate and timely transfer information.
