#MCCGrads2023: 2 commencement ceremonies this year, plus more numbers to know

2: Number of commencement ceremonies MCC is holding this year, at 1 and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18, at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. Two ceremonies are a first for the College.


About 850: Grads walking at commencement. The evening edition is at capacity for graduates (about 460) and their guests. About 380 grads are expected at the earlier ceremony.


12: Time, as in 12 noon, when the College will close on commencement day (May 18). 


1,957: Graduates in MCC’s Class of 2023


92: High school students graduating from an MCC Early College Academy. Typically they’re presented their high school and MCC diplomas within days of each other.


123 (6% of the class): Students graduating with high honors, signifying a cumulative GPA between 3.9 and 4.0


375 (19%): Students graduating with honors, signifying a GPA between 3.5 and 3.8


70 (4% of the class): Graduates who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society


793: Grads between the ages of 21-29 (the largest segment, 41% of the class). But 20-and-under grads are not far behind: there are 749 of them (38% of the class).


162: Grads who are 40 or older (8% of the class)


62: Percentage of female graduates (1,213) this year. Male graduates: 38% (744 students).


1,227: Number of students earning MCC’s most popular credential, the associate in arts (A.A.) transfer degree. The second-most-popular degree is the associate in applied science (A.A.S.) — 424 students.


594: Certificates earned this year (by 583 students)


Other good info about commencement:

  • As has been the case in recent years, our commencement ceremonies will be livestreamed online: 1 and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 18. Go to mcckc.edu. Recordings of the programs will also be posted later on the website.
  • Each ceremony will have its own student speaker: Thomas Creach (MCC-Penn Valley) at 1 p.m. and Aden Bakken (MCC-Online) at 6 p.m. (read more about Thomas and Aden). Also, the MCC Foundation will be announcing this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipients, one at each ceremony.
