Social Work

Social work is a profession that strives to enhance the social functioning of all people and promotes the development of social and environmental conditions that will help people achieve their maximum potential.

Social work training helps prepare you for being an advocate for people who are often in difficult situations. Social workers may work with children, aging adults, victims of crime or trauma, people handling addiction, and those facing difficult family or legal situations. Careers in social work include case workers, case managers and counselors. Employment exists in a variety of areas including with the department of corrections, police departments, marriage and family counselors, mental health facilities, rehabilitation facilities for substance abuse and addiction, assisted living facilities, nursing homes, and hospitals.

Choose the two-year Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree with recommended social work electives if you want to transfer to another college for a four-year degree. In addition to the recommended electives, you'll cover the required general education coursework and electives for a total of 60 credit hours. Please speak with an academic advisor regarding the best course sequence.

Recommended electives are suggested courses designed to help students successfully transfer to a major area of study. These courses are not guaranteed to transfer. Students should consult with advisors at both MCC and the receiving institution.
