Mathematics is the foundation of many fields, that anyone with a good command of math has countless opportunities.

Many of today's hottest careers are technical in nature and require some math expertise, and almost every endeavor needs excellent problem-solving and critical thinking skills. Our math courses include everything from basic math up to calculus and differential equations.

Choices in mathematics

Degree-seeking students at MCC can choose from three different mathematics courses:

Math 115 - Statistics

In this course, students will be introduced to statistical analysis and reasoning. Students are likely to encounter real-world applications, use of technology and project-based learning. This course is a good choice for students considering a non-STEM related degree such as psychology, history or music.

Math 119 - Mathematical Reasoning and Modeling

Material in this course will span several different areas of mathematics including statistics, probability, sets, algebra and logic. Students should expect to work in groups and think about problems as they relate to the everyday experience.

This course is a good choice for students considering a non-STEM related degree. Specifically, those seeking a degree in education should strongly consider taking this course.

Math 120 - College Algebra

This course will be very similar to a traditional algebra course. Many of the topics are similar to those studied in high school Algebra 1 and Algebra 2. This course is a good choice for students considering a STEM related degree.

Depending on placement, some students may require a semester or two of developmental coursework before taking the above courses. The course that you will choose depends on different factors, such as what degree you are seeking and which transfer institution you choose.

It is best to have a conversation with a Student Success Advisor before making any final decisions that will affect your program of study.

Corequisite support courses

To help students be more successful, MCC has implemented corequisite support courses in each of the above courses. In a corequisite support course, students will meet with the instructor for an additional two hours each week.

During this extra time, the instructor will offer additional assistance based on any questions and concerns students express about material. The corequisite support courses are as follows:

  • Math 88 - Statistics Support (Math 115 corequisite)
  • Math 89 - Mathematical Reasoning and Modeling Support (Math 119 corequisite)
  • Math 99 - College Algebra Support (Math 120 corequisite)

These courses are an excellent option for students who struggle with mathematics and can benefit from extra support. An Student Success Advisor can assist in choosing the corequisite support course to best fit each student.

Transfer made simple

Whatever your transfer destination, we'll work to make sure your credits move easily. That's why we're experts at it. We've worked out specific transfer agreements with many four-year colleges and universities.

The mathematics discipline is built around the Associate in Arts (A.A.) degree that can transfer to a four-year institution. It provides a well-rounded general educational foundation and elective options to focus on your interests.

While MCC does not offer a degree in this field, these freshman/sophomore level courses move with you to a four-year college or university and depending on your chosen major may apply toward your degree or as an elective.

Please check with a Student Success Advisor for transfer information.
