2: Number of commencement ceremonies MCC is holding this year ... at 1 and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16, at Cable Dahmer Arena in Independence. The College first offered two same-day ceremonies in 2023. Without the addition of the afternoon program, grads would be limited to two guest tickets each, organizers say.

850-900: Grads walking at 2024 commencement. About 365 are expected at the earlier ceremony, with about 500 expected for the evening edition. Those numbers, if they hold, will be quite similar to 2023 attendance.

59: Percent of our 2024 grads who are women. This 59-41 female/male split reflects a national trend of significantly more women attending college than men.

2,018: Graduates in MCC’s Class of 2024, based on applications for graduation as of early May. The class includes students completing studies in Fall 2023 and Spring and Summer 2024.

41: Members of the class who say they'll be graduating from MCC at the same time as another family member, including 14 moms, 6 brothers, 6 sisters and 4 cousins, according to a survey. Of the 41, 14 said they'll be graduating alongside two family members.

150 (7% of the class): Students graduating with high honors, signifying a cumulative GPA between 3.9 and 4.0

396 (20%): Students graduating with honors, signifying a GPA between 3.5 and 3.8

69 (3% of the class): Graduates who are members of Phi Theta Kappa, the academic honor society

871: Grads who are 20 and younger (the largest segment, 43% of the class). But grads 21 to 29 years old are not far behind: there are 764 of them (38% of the class).

153: Grads who are 40 or older (8% of the class)

1,241: Number of students expected to earn MCC’s most popular credential, the associate in arts (A.A.) transfer degree

586: Certificates expected to be conferred this year (to 560 students)

Other good info about MCC's 2024 commencement

  • Our commencement ceremonies will be livestreamed online: 1 and 6 p.m. Thursday, May 16. Go to mcckc.edu. Recordings of the programs will also be posted later on the website.
  • Each ceremony will have its own student speaker: Darelle Wabo (MCC-Longview) at 1 p.m. and Erin Fox (MCC-Blue River) at 6 p.m. Also, the MCC Foundation will be announcing this year’s Distinguished Alumni Award recipient, who we hear is a former player for a much-loved, hometown pro football team.
  • Trent Skaggs, who just stepped off the MCC Board of Trustees, will deliver special remarks at commencement. He served two six-year terms, including eight years as president.
  • Employees working at the two ceremonies will be sporting blue T-shirts with an image of the MCC Wolf in a graduation cap, plus the words "Commencement Crew." Lost? Have a question? They're there to help.
