Tutoring

MCC-Maple Woods Reading and Writing Lab

Our trained tutors and Learning Specialist offer assistance for writing essays and research papers for any course.  We will not proofread or correct errors, but we will help students recognize errors in organization, grammar, citations, punctuation, and style, and we will teach students strategies to become a stronger writer and to create better papers.

Reading

Our Learning Specialist and tutors provide individualized instruction in reading and study strategies to help students improve comprehension and retention in most courses.

Content Tutoring

We provide tutoring for different content areas depending on the availability of tutors. Typically, we provide help for psychology, sociology, history, philosophy, speech, and Spanish. Because the availability of tutoring for specific content areas varies, appointments are required.

Appointments

Appointments are suggested, but not required for one-on-one tutoring in reading or writing.  One-on-one appointments may be scheduled for one hour. Dependent upon tutor availability, one-on-one tutoring is also available on a walk-in basis. Drop-in tutoring is available with no time limit.  During drop-in tutoring, students work independently, but our tutors and Learning Specialist are available to answer questions. Students who prefer an appointment may schedule an appointment by writing their name in the appointment book in the lab or by calling 816.604.3190.
