For too many years, academically-based fire science programs lacked consistency and transferability between higher education institutions. In 2001, the National Fire Science Curriculum Committee was formed to develop standard titles, descriptions, outcomes, and outlines for six core courses intended to form the foundation of a standard fire science program curriculum. In 2002, the Fire and Emergency Services Higher Education (FESHE) conference attendees approved the model curriculum outlines, and major fire textbook publishers committed to writing texts for some, if not all, of these courses. The National Fire Academy ultimately released its core and non-core FESHE Model Curriculum for both associate degree and bachelor degree fire science programs.
The (FESHE) Recognition certificate is an acknowledgment that a collegiate emergency services degree program meets the minimum standards of excellence established by FESHE professional development committees and the National Fire Academy (NFA). Only those regionally- or nationally-accredited colleges and universities that have demonstrated a commitment to the FESHE model of standardized professional development education criteria receive FESHE recognition. FESHE concentrates on degree programs that emphasize firefighting response, fire prevention, fire administration, and Emergency Medical Services management.
In 2010, MCC Blue River changed its Fire Science Technology program to align with the FESHE curriculum. Currently, the MCC Fire Science Technology AAS program is the only FESHE-recognized associate degree program in the State of Missouri.
FESHE at PBCC
At the Fire EMS Partnership council held in July of 2009, the membership voted unanimously to adopt the FESHE curriculum for the Fire Science AS degree. The new curriculum was changed by the addition of an Area III math class to the general education requirements, three new classes: Fire Behavior and Combustion, Principles of Emergency Services, and Principles of Fire and Emergency Services Safety and Survival to the core requirements. Private Fire Protection, Codes and Standards, and Blueprint Reading were moved from elective to core requirement. HazMat I, Public Personnel Management, Course Delivery, and Fire Administration were moved to electives.
Once the student has completed the core requirements they will have completed the coursework for Fire Inspector, Special Fire Safety Inspector, and five classes towards the Fire Officer I certification. This new curriculum will start August 23, 2010.
