John M. Chawana, vice chancellor, institutional effectiveness, research and technology

John M. Chawana, Ph.D., became Metropolitan Community College's vice chancellor of institutional effectiveness, research and technology in October 2017. Chawana joined MCC from Tarrant County College in Fort Worth, Texas, where he was executive director of institutional effectiveness and compliance.

At MCC, Chawana oversees the areas of institutional research, effectiveness and planning, as well as technology. As a member of the College's Executive Cabinet, he reports to Chancellor Kimberly Beatty.

At Tarrant County College, Chawana provided leadership in designing and developing institution-wide strategic imperatives for organizational effectiveness and planning, as well as ensuring overall institutional compliance with federal and accreditation requirements. Under his leadership, the college revamped and streamlined multiple organizational functions to achieve operational efficiency.

Prior to joining TCC, Chawana worked as a lead economic planner and analyst at North Central Texas Council of Governments, the metropolitan planning organization of Dallas/Fort Worth. His teaching and research experience spans Brookhaven College and Cedar Valley College, both in Texas, as well as University of North Texas, University of Texas at Arlington and University of Phoenix.

He holds a master's degree in city and regional planning and a doctoral degree in urban planning, both from University of Texas at Arlington. He also has a master's degree in sociology and public administration from University of North Texas.

Donald Chrusciel, Ph.D., joined Metropolitan Community College in June 2018 as vice chancellor of administrative services and chief financial officer. He came to MCC from Bakersfield College in California, where he served as vice president of finance and administrative services. Prior to that, he served in a similar role at the University of Central Oklahoma.

Oklahoma is not the only Midwestern flavor in Chrusciel's past. He previously led business services in positions at Iowa State University of Science and Technology in Ames and at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater.

Chrusciel's well-rounded academic background includes a community college. He holds a doctorate in industrial education and technology from Iowa State University, a master's in management information systems and operations management from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee, and a master's in business administration from California State University. His undergraduate degrees include a bachelor's in biochemistry from Michigan State University in Lansing and an associate in science from Grand Rapids Community (Junior) College in Michigan.

He is the author of more than a dozen publications and multiple presentations covering areas going beyond providing high-quality support services issues to also include significant/strategic change, leadership issues, process improvement, operations management, materiel management, sustainability (economic, environmental and social), feedback methods, value metrics, benchmarking and the impact of technology on the organization.


Sue Gochis, vice chancellor, instruction

Sue Gochis, vice chancellor, instruction

Sue Gochis, Metropolitan Community College's vice chancellor for instruction and chief academic officer, landed here from California, but her roots run deep in Kansas — and community colleges. Although she started her career teaching high school math, Gochis has worked exclusively at community colleges for 25 years, first as a faculty member and later as an administrator. 

She joined MCC in July 2020 after serving (since 2017) as assistant superintendent and vice president of student services at Cabrillo College in Northern California. At Cabrillo she oversaw admissions and records, financial aid, campus security, student conduct, academic counseling, career services, advising, assessment, first-year experience and student organizations, among other programs.  

"A community college system is the only place I want to work," says Gochis (pronounced GAW-chiss). "Everyone is so diverse and at different stages in their lives. Community colleges are able to provide opportunities to truly transform lives, and that is something that makes me so devoted to the community college mission." 

She is a graduate of Blue Valley High School who went on to Pittsburg State, earning a bachelor of science in education: psychology major with a teaching minor in math. She also has a master of science in higher education from Southwestern College in Winfield, Kansas. 

Gochis spent a chunk of her career, 1995-2012, at Cowley College in Arkansas City, Kansas, initially as a full-time algebra instructor and assistant volleyball coach. She went on to serve there in roles including admissions director, dean of student life and vice president of student affairs. From 2013-2017 she was executive dean of student success at Lake Tahoe Community College in California.

Dr. Kathrine Swanson, vice chancellor, student success and engagement

Kathrine Swanson, Ed.D., became Metropolitan Community College's vice chancellor for student success and engagement in August 2015.

Swanson came to MCC from Montgomery County Community College in Blue Bell, Penn., where she served for 10 years as a member of the senior leadership team, last as vice president for student affairs and enrollment management. In that role, she was responsible for areas including institutional research, admissions, registration, financial aid, child care, student leadership and involvement, advising, counseling, career services, dual-enrollment initiatives, testing and placement, transfer services, veterans services and many grant-funded specialty programs.

Swanson holds a bachelor's degree in business management from Northern Michigan University, a master's in adult and higher education from Montana State University and a doctorate in higher education administration from the University of North Texas.

Prior to her position at Montgomery County, Swanson was associate dean of students at Collin County Community College in McKinney, Texas. She also held the positions of executive director for community relations, acting provost and director of recruitment and retention during her time at Collin County Community College.

At MCC, she is responsible for student access and success initiatives through leading strategic enrollment management planning and student financial services and collaborating with campus leaders to ensure student development areas such as counseling, disability services and campus life are providing opportunities for student engagement and success both in and out of the classroom.
