A reading program administered by the Community Education department of Metropolitan Community College-Longview.
Metropolitan Community College-Longview is committed to working with students of all ages who would benefit from improving their reading skills and literacy levels. The MCC-Longview Reading Horizons program offers evaluative screening and private one-on-one instruction for children and adults. Our Learning Specialists have been trained in several proven reading methods including Lindamood-Bell and Orton-Gillingham. The program is administered by the Community Education department and is open to anyone in the community.
MCC-Longview strives to create an environment that will allow your student to maximize his/her learning experience. Our Learning Specialists are experienced, caring professionals who respect each student’s individuality and customize instruction accordingly.
Please read the following guidelines and policies for Reading Horizons and contact us at 816.604.2030 if you have questions or concerns.

Payments for scheduled sessions must be made on a biweekly basis, according to the Reading Horizons billing schedule, which is made available to all students in the program. If you desire, you may pay for the entire program in advance to guarantee priority scheduling. In cases of shared custody of the student, we require that only one parent be responsible for payment to MCC-Longview for the child’s Reading Horizons sessions.
We accept payment by debit or credit only (VISA, MasterCard, or Discover). To set up payment, contact the Community Education office at 816.604.2030. If you would like to set up payment in person, our office is located in the Business Building, Room 101, on the MCC-Longview campus, 500 SW Longview Road, Lee’s Summit, MO 64081.
Cancellations Due to Weather
When MCC-Longview or Metropolitan Community College District cancels classes, Reading Horizons sessions will also be cancelled. In that case, you will not be charged for that day’s session. If MCC does not cancel and your clinician is on campus, ready for your session, you will be charged if you choose not to attend.
Please be sure to listen for TV or radio announcements for cancellations. If you are unsure, please contact your clinician or the Community Education office at 816.604.2030.
MCC campuses are closed, and there will be no sessions on the following holidays:
- Martin Luther King, Jr. Day
- Independence Day (if holiday falls on a weekend, it is observed on the closest weekday)
- Labor Day
- Thanksgiving Day and the day following
- Holiday Break (usually Christmas Eve and the week following; exact dates will be provided closer to holiday)
Campus may be closed for other events; the Community Education Office will give advance notice to Reading Horizons students.
A parent or guardian must accompany all minor children to each session on campus. You must supervise your child prior to the beginning of each session and pick him or her up immediately after each session. We require you to remain on campus during your child’s tutoring session. While you remain on campus, you may wait in the Business Building seating areas near the Reading Horizons office or in the Student Lounge on the second floor of the Business Building. If you choose to leave the Business Building during your child’s session, please notify the clinician and leave a number where you can be reached.
To achieve optimum results, regular attendance is critical. Although students are expected to attend all scheduled sessions, we recognize that illness or extenuating circumstances may arise. If your child cannot attend a session, please notify your Learning Specialist at least 24 hours in advance.
Please respect our Specialist’s schedule and arrive a few minutes prior to your child’s sessions so that he/she will be prepared to begin at the scheduled time. Tardiness may result in the inability to conduct a scheduled session.
Because our Learning Specialists work on a specific schedule, you will be charged for each session that is canceled less than 24 hours in advance during regular business hours. You must notify your Learning Specialist to cancel or reschedule a session. Excessive absences may negatively affect your child’s progress and jeopardize his/her priority scheduling status in the program.
Observing your child
A parent or guardian may observe a child’s sessions with the permission of the Learning Specialist. Observing your child’s session is beneficial for you in order to reinforce the program at home. Please honor the following guidelines:
- Do not interrupt or give feedback during the session.
- Be mindful of your Specialist’s schedule.
- Siblings are not allowed.
- Only one approved observer may be present at any time.
- Learning Specialist may ask parent or guardian to leave if his or her behavior is disruptive to child’s session.
We strive to provide our students with an environment that facilitates learning. This requires that students be respectful of other students and their Learning Specialist. Behaviors that are disruptive or harmful will not be tolerated. The following steps will be taken when a student’s behavior is unacceptable:
- The Learning Specialist will discuss the inappropriate behavior with the child. The parent or guardian will be notified.
- If the problematic behavior continues, the Learning Specialist will discuss the situation with the child and parent, and a behavior modification plan will be developed.
- In extreme circumstances, the student may be withdrawn from the Reading Solutions program.
- At times, we may require parent or guardian to be present during the entire tutoring session
Post-testing is administered at the end of the scheduled number of sessions. Your child should have a good night’s sleep and a meal or snack prior to testing for best results. Please be on time for scheduled testing, as our testing schedule is very strict. Your Learning Specialist will schedule a 10-minute post-testing conference. At this conference, your Specialist will discuss your child’s progress and inform you of our recommendations based on the test results. You will not be charged for this conference. If additional time is needed, please inform your Learning Specialist so that she can allow for a longer session in her schedule. For each additional 15 minutes of conference time there will be a $10 charge.
