On Nov. 5, 2024, voters residing in the Platte County R-III school district will be asked to approve attaching their K-12 district to that of Metropolitan Community College. A simple majority (more than 50%) of voters in the school district must vote in approval for attachment for it to pass in that district.
For purposes of this vote, what does attachment mean?
Attachment means a K-12 school district will become a part of the Metropolitan Community
College District by supporting the MCC tax base.
What happens when the voters in a K-12 school district vote to approve attachment
to the MCC District?
The most immediate benefit is that students residing in the newly attached school
district (including dual credit and early college students still in high school) will
see their tuition cost per credit hour reduced from $237 to $121 per credit hour.
What are long-term benefits to approving attachment to the MCC District?
With increased equitable access to higher education, more people will earn greater
income to redirect toward living expenses such as transportation, child care and groceries.
MCC will also be able to expand services provided due to a larger resource base.
What happens if the voters in a school district choose to not approve attachment?
The school district will remain in MCC’s service area, but benefits such as lower
in-district tuition rates will not be available.
Why is now an important time to bring attachment to the ballot?
Workforce needs in the Greater Kansas City Region are greater than ever. Defraying
the cost of education will provide greater access to the affordable higher education
and workforce training needed to address this demand.
