2019 Cross Country Season Ends at NJCAA National Championship

The Metropolitan Community College cross country team wrapped up competition in the 2019 season at the NJCAA National Championship in Albuquerque, NM.  The Wolves were represented by three runners in the men’s race and three runners in the women’s race. The Wolves fought hard and battled a new variable: altitude.

The top performance of the women’s 5k race was achieved by sophomore Wasu Janis.  Wasu matched her personal best time in the 5k with a time of 20:33 and earned a 68th place finish out of 290 runners.

Freshman Aubrie Heck was close behind with a time of 20:36 and a 73rd place finish.  Freshman Lexxy Appleman rounded out the team with a time of 22:40 and a 182nd place finish.

The men’s 8k race followed shortly after.  Leading the pack was sophomore Zach Hill with a time of 27:32 and finishing in 138th place out of 343 runners.

Freshman Cameron Deatherage followed behind with a time of 28:17 and a 194th place finish.  Freshman Austyn Smith was involved in a pile up 200 meters into the race and was able to recover and finish with a time of 31:03 and 303rd place.

The Wolves went toe-to-toe with the nation’s best and gained championship experience as freshmen and sophomores.

MCC Cross Country History

For several years, MCC runners have competed in meets across the country winning top honors for both athleticism and academics. We stress academic success first and then athletics. Our first team goal is to have an NJCAA Academic All American team with a 3.25 GPA and individual NJCAA Academic All Americans with a 3.65 GPA! We have been an NJCAA Academic All American team 6 times out of the last 12 years and had over 20 individuals reaching 3.65 GPA!

We compete at the NJCAA Division II level, which includes over 65 community colleges throughout the country. Over the years we have placed in the top 25  three times and the top 20 twice.

This year promises to be just as memorable, thanks to terrific student-athletes backed by a strong program.
