METROPOLITAN COMMUNITY COLLEGE
BIOL 150 INTERNET MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY

INSTRUCTOR: Steven Lewis

This class is offered online each semester – fall, spring and summer – as well as on campus. I make the Blackboard site available a month before the start of the semester. Email me if you have questions about this class. If you are planning to enter the Health Information Technology program for medical coding you should take HITE 103 Medical Terminology for Health Records instead of BIOL 150. Please note that I do not enroll students nor am I informed of day-to-day changes in enrollment. If a position opens because a student drops the class or is dropped for non-payment, Metrolink will note the opening. Openings are most likely to occur when the college drops students for non-payment. These dates are listed in the MCC credit schedule. If you must have this class to enter or complete an MCC career program, contact your program coordinator if the class is full.

This course outline is designed to help you decide if this class is for you. Medical Terminology will be taught through the Blackboard website. To confirm your attendance you must log-in to the Blackboard site during the first week of the semester, read the syllabus, send me a message using the Blackboard messaging system and introduce yourself to your classmates on the Blackboard discussion forum. In your message to me you should notify me of your preferred testing location from the available options. If you are unable to log in, you should contact the distance education office for instructions.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:
BIOL 150 is an internet-based medical terminology class. Most students who take this class are planning to major in a health-care field, like nursing or radiology or physical therapy. We will study the meanings and origins of terms used in the medical literature and relate these to normal human body function. This class has no prerequisites, but if you have taken an anatomy class you will find learning the terms much easier. This class is not intended for students who wish to become medical coders. The MCC Health Information Technology program offers its own medical terminology class for this purpose, HITE 103.

This class is offered by MCC both on campus and on the internet. An internet class may be for you if you are self-disciplined and have regular access to computers, the internet and Blackboard. There are no class meetings. You will need to schedule a time to come to one of the MCC campuses four times throughout the semester to take the four exams. There is a deadline for taking each exam, and you must take the exams in the assigned sequence. You may, however, complete the class as fast as you wish. An exam and project are due about every 4 weeks. Your projects will be turned in by posting them to the Blackboard discussion forum.

TEXTBOOK:
The required text is
Exploring Medical Language by Myrna LaFleur Brooks, 7th edition, Mosby-Elsevier, 2009. The 7th edition differs little from the 6th, so if you are short of cash you may use the 6th edition. The bookstore package includes a CDROM. The text is available from the Penn Valley bookstore (816-437-3399) and can be delivered through the mail. NOTE: Purchase of a medical dictionary is NOT a requirement for this class.

COURSE GRADE:
Five hundred points are possible in this class -- 400 from exams and 100 from projects. Your final grade will be based on this schedule:

·  90% of total points = 450 points = A

·  80% of total points = 400 points = B

·  70% of total points = 350 points = C

·  60% of total points = 300 points = D

·  Less than 60% of total points = F
