Handcuffing.  Wielding the baton.  Conducting a homicide or meth lab investigation.  Interviewing techniques.  CPR.  Effective supervisory practices.

These are just some of the hundreds of skills taught at the MCC-Blue River Public Safety Institute as part of the Police Academy Certificate program.  Since 1995, the Academy has provided certified training as set forth by the Missouri Department of Public Safety/POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training), the regulatory agency which is responsible for the licensure of peace officers in the state of Missouri.

To assure effective learning, our peace officer curriculum provides both lecture-based and hands-on instruction, including live weapons fire at our firing range, physical and defensive tactics drills as well as scenario training, so each recruit can experience what it is really like out in the field.  Precision simulators deliver shoot/no and pursuit driving experience.  The driving simulators can provide day, night, clear, rain and even foggy weather simulations.

For in-vehicle driving practice, an advanced emergency vehicle driving course at our Precision Driving Center (PDC), located just east of the main Blue River campus, provides a combination of urban and highway driving scenarios.  The PDC also features a skid pad where recruits can master high-performance skid control techniques.

All MCC-Blue River Police Academy instructors are either currently employed in or recently retired from active law enforcement.  Each one is highly regarded in his or her area of expertise and brings real-world training to the classroom.

The MCC-Blue River Police Academy Program has two Academy options:

  • A one-semester, full-time day academy, offered in January and in August.  The January Academy graduates in May and the August Academy graduates in December.  The hours for the full-time Academies are Monday through Friday, 7:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  • A two-semester, part-time academy, designed primarily for the working adult, offered once each year in August.  Hours for the part-time academy are Monday through Thursday from 5:30 p.m. to 10:30 p.m. and some Saturdays from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.   The Saturday is schedule is typically two Saturdays on and one Saturday off.
