A wireless high-speed Internet connection is available to students in the library. Students will need a personal laptop with wireless capability.

Electronic Resources

More than 40 databases on a variety of subjects are available to be accessed either in the library or from remote locations. These electronic databases include full-text articles, and abstracting and indexing from thousands of journals and newspapers. More than 1,400 web-sites have been selected and cataloged into easy subject categories and may be searched from the library homepage under Web Links.

Reserve Materials

Many Longview Community College faculty members place items on reserve in the library. The faculty members designate the loan periods and use restrictions; some may be for library use only. Faculty members follow copyright laws when placing items on reserves. Reserve items may include supplemental readings as well as DVDs. Reserve items are listed in the online library catalog. A current student ID card is necessary to use reserve materials.

Interlibrary Loan

Print resources from the other Metropolitan Community College campus libraries are available through the Kansas City online catalog. Kansas City is part of the MOBIUS consortium of Missouri academic libraries.
Any current MCC student or employee may request library materials directly through either the Kansas City catalog or the MOBIUS sites.
Interlibrary loan requests for books not found in the MCC, Kansas City or MOBIUS catalogs may be placed through the Longview Library.
Periodical, magazine and newspaper articles not owned by Longview Library may also be requested.

Reference Assistance

Please call the reference desk at 816.604.2268 for help with research assignments, online resources and other reference questions.

Information Literacy Instruction and Tours

Faculty members may contact the library reference desk to schedule an information literacy instruction and/or tours. 48-hour notice is needed for adequate preparation. Please submit a class assignment before each instruction. All information literacy instructions take place in the Library, room 115 unless other arrangements are made.

Reference by Appointment

Students who need more in-depth reference assistance may request a Reference-by-Appointment session. This is a half-hour, one-on-one research assistance session with a reference librarian. The librarian will guide you through resources that might be useful for your assignment, suggest alternative search terms for your topic and assist you with the interlibrary loan process. RBAs are by appointment only and require 48 hours notice. To schedule: contact the library reference desk at 816.604.2268.

Copyright

Longview Community College Library complies fully with all of the provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) and its amendments. The library supports the Fair Use section of the Copyright Law (17 U.S.C. 107) which permits and protects citizens' rights to reproduce and make other uses of copyrighted works for the purposes of teaching, scholarships and research.

Interlibrary Loan

Since the library makes no effort to collect at the research level, and usually does not provide materials to support faculty and staff pursuing advanced degrees, interlibrary loan and document delivery will be utilized to provide materials outside the scope of the library's collection.

Policies

Use of Computers

Computer users are required to follow the MCC college use guidelines and the Morenet acceptable use policy. Computers are for research and course assignment use.  Refunds are not made for user printer errors.

Copy Machines

Copy machines are provided for the purpose of copying items that are Library Use Only as well as other material. Cost is $.10 page.

Unsupervised Children

As institutions of higher education, the Metropolitan Community Colleges attempt to provide environments, which promote learning for the students that are served. The library environment normally is not an appropriate place for children. Library staff may request that children be removed from the library, if necessary. Leaving your child unsupervised in the library while you are in class could place your child at risk. Therefore, students are prohibited from leaving a child unattended. Unattended children will be reported to the campus police and the parent/guardian responsible could face disciplinary action.

Cellular Phones and Pagers

Classrooms, labs, and areas designated for studying should be free of distractions. Therefore, the use of cellular telephones, pagers or audible signaling devices in such areas is not allowed.

Food/Drink Policy

No food or drinks are allowed in the library. An exception is made for water in a container with a lid. Please confine all other eating and drinking to the designated areas in other campus buildings or outside of the library.

Smoking/Tobacco Policy

All campus buildings are smoke free. There is to be no smoking or use of chewing tobacco by students, employees or visitors in any building including the library.
