Sara Gardner is on her second year as an instructor of the Foreign Language Interpreting program at Maple Woods. She has been certified as an interpreter by the Office of State Courts administrator in the State of Missouri since 2001 and has completed extensive educational programs including the 125 hour interpreting program at the Agnese-Haury Institute for Interpretation and Translation at the University of Arizona.
She has also completed 40 hours of the Bridging the Gap medical interpreting program provided by the Jewish Vocational Center. Sara conducts Instructional programs for area interpreters and is recognized as one of the foremost authorities on Interpretation and Translation in the Midwest. She has testified as an expert witness in several federal and state criminal proceedings and has been qualified as an expert by the United States Tenth Circuit Court of Appeals. She has been retained by various federal agencies to facilitate timely translation of sensitive information.
Susan Garrett received her B.A. in Spanish from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. Susan is currently a Research Associate at the University of Kansas Medical Center Department of Preventive Medicine focusing on tobacco use among Latinos and tobacco treatment in substance abuse treatment facilities. She has been a medical interpreter in the Kansas City area since 2000 serving hospitals, clinics, and private practice. She teaches a medical interpreting course in the spring semester at MCC-Maple Woods.
Alexis Mayo holds a lifetime Missouri teaching certificate in French and Spanish. She has taught for over twenty years in Missouri and Pennsylvania. During that time she has been a board member of the Foreign Language Association of Missouri and has worked as a Liaison for foreign exchange students.
Now she trains interpreters, teaches cultural competency and customized Spanish classes for various businesses. She is a French and Spanish interpreter and translator. She is the author of several Foreign Language Textbooks.
