Social Justice Institute
Metropolitan Community College
October 27, 2017
Examining the literature on social justice and education is a complex process because it interfaces the development of society with the role of education and in terms of purpose and outcomes means that educational institutions are directly involved in and reflect the social, cultural and economic activity of society.
The social justice goal of constructing societies which are more inclusive, fair and democratically enabling remains a central normative and policy challenge, both in relation to the contribution of higher education to societal progress as well as within higher education itself. Singh (p. 491-492, 2011)
The goal of SJC is to provide practitioners with an experience in which they can walk away with tools to help them grow as advocates for social justice on their campuses. This half day institute will feature engaging speakers and interactive workshops.
SJC will feature faculty from the Social Justice Training Institute providing interactive workshops addressing social justice initiatives and practices. SJC participants will have a chance to network and discuss what is happening on their campuses in a setting that allows for networking and dialoguing on best practices. This will also allow for participants to develop ideas and programs that fit their specific campus needs.
On behalf of the Office on Inclusion and Engagements and the Office of the Chancellor for the Metropolitan Community College, we are pleased to extend an invitation to attend the Social Justice Institute on October 27, 2017. SJI's goal is to provide MCC employees with an opportunity to share ideas, strategies and programs centered on Social Justice so that professionals can get tools to take back to their campuses that promote, encourage and create inclusive experiences for faculty, staff and students.
Our hope is to provide MCC practitioners with an experience where they can focus on their own learning and development. This will increase their multicultural competency and provide practical ideas and strategies to implement in their daily responsibilities and work.
The SJI will provide opportunities to meet, network, and learn from other campus professionals that are dedicated to serving the needs of our students through social justice work. Please register as soon as possible as space is limited. We look forward to seeing you at SJI!
