New Officer Nominees!

Upsilon Kappa is holding a special election to fill the three open officer positions:

  • Vice-President of Service
  • Vice-President of Public Relations
  • Vice-President of Records

Nominations opened for the membership at the induction ceremony on Thursday, February 22, 2007. Nominations were originally scheduled to close following the Regional Convention on March 5th, however, they were extended till the general meeting on March 10th. The nominations closed at that meeting with four candidates for two of the three open positions. One candidate subsequently recalled thier own nomination leaving three candidates for the two positions.

Voting was opened at the March 10th meeting and it will continue till the next member meeting on March 24th, 2007 at 11am in CA203. All members are encouraged to participate in the election by reviewing the nominees and voting for who they want each position. The nominee biographies can be found on our website (at http://mcckc.edu/pennvalley/ptk/pdf/OfficerNoms0703.pdf) and our Yahoo Group.

The membership may vote online through the Yahoo Group polls section, or by alerting our advisor, Pamela Yeager, or by voting in-person at the next meeting.

Good luck to each of the candidates, and thank you for your energy, enthusiasm, and commitment to our chapter and Phi Theta Kappa!

Penn Valley's Honor Society Welcomes New Members!

Upsilon Kappa, Penn Valley's local chapter of the international honor society of Phi Theta Kappa, recently grew by welcoming 39 new members into its esteemed society. The provisionary members were made official through a two hour christening induction ceremony held on Thursday, March 24 at Penn Valley Community College.

Eligibility requirements for induction into the international honor society of Phi Theta Kappa is based on academic achievement and is as follow: 3.5 GPA for 12 credit hours, a minimum maintained GPA of 3.0 and attendance at an accredited two year college.

Phi Theta Kappa is an international honor society of two year colleges with over 30 million dollars in available scholarships. It provides an atmosphere to exchange ideas, develop leadership talents and earn respect from peers and instructors. Phi Theta Kappa's mission is two-fold: 1) recognize and encourage the academic achievement of two-year college students and (2) provide opportunities for individual growth and development through participation in honors, leadership, service and fellowship programming. This international honor society encompasses 1,200 chapters in the United States, Canada and Germany.

Penn Valley's honor society members currently total over 300. Upsilon Kappa was recently awarded the Missouri State Five Star Award, Most Improved Chapter and Most Distinguished Chapter President at the Missouri regional convention in Columbia, Missouri. Current chapter president Sarah Eiker and society member Miranda Owen were also elected to regional officer positions. Upsilon Kappa is presently competing for international recognition and awards, which will be announced April 13.



Penn Valley Student Wins Missouri State Academic Award


McNeil receives recognition, an award and big hug from Upsilon Kappa President, Sarah Eiker, for his dedication to Penn Valley's honor society at the recent New Member Induction Ceremony.

Penn Valley student Myron McNeil will be presented with the prestigious All-Missouri Academic First Team Award. McNeil is recognized for his outstanding academic record, participation in honors programs and his service to the college and community. An official award luncheon will be held in Jefferson City at noon on Wednesday, April 6.

McNeil, a sophomore majoring in English and Philosophy, is currently the Vice President of Community Service for Penn Valley's Upsilon Kappa Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa. He is also involved as the Community Service Chair for the Penn Valley's Student Activities Council, a member of the Advocates for Better Government and is active in Penn Valley's Honors Program. McNeil is involved in his community through public speaking to youth and has goal of becoming an asset to the preservation of historic Kansas City buildings and neighborhoods.

The All-Missouri Academic Award is a state honor bestowed through a partnership between the Missouri Community College Association and the international honor society of Phi Theta Kappa. Nominations for this award are provided by chapter advisors and two year college presidents.
