Facts about Fitness

Facts about FitnessAre you interested in proper nutrition and fitness for life? Does your inquiring mind want the facts about physical fitness? Be a myth-buster by learning about daily exercise, weight training, weight management and nutrition. Learn to find your pulse and determine your rate of exertion during exercise. Safety and proper mechanics will be covered during indoor and outdoor exercises. Participate in daily exercises through either weight training or cardiovascular exercise. Each day will end with preparing a healthy meal or snack!

Poetry and Lyrics
Poetry and LyricsDo you have an interest in songwriting? Have you shown a poem to friends and family and had them tell you that it would be a terrific song? This workshop is designed to help you make that connection! You will learn to recognize and understand different types of popular song structures, understand the vital connection between lyrics and music, and write lyrics that can stand on their own as powerful poetry (and vice versa). If you are a musician, this workshop will help you construct lyrics. If you are a poet, we can help with the music. All are welcome!

Talking Hands
Talking HandsDo you have a friend or classmate who is Deaf? Have you ever wondered what all those hand movements mean? If so, this class is for you! You will learn to fingerspell through games and to sign a song. Learn to convey information by using a simple hand shape within the context of a story. Find out how to sign an introduction to a Deaf person and carry on a simple conversation. You will also explore Deaf culture while becoming comfortable using your hands to communicate.

The Science of Energy
This course is designed for students who are interested in environmental science, engineering or chemistry. We will discuss all aspects of where the energy that we use everyday comes from. Specifically, we will discuss coal and its role in generating electricity; crude oil and how we refine it into gasoline; how corn, sugar cane and soy are converted to bio-fuels. We will also look at alternative energy sources such as geothermal, wind, hydroelectric and nuclear. Be ready for some chemistry, biology, physics, electricity and environmental Science in this all-inclusive look at the role of Energy in our world. We may even have something to say about Global Warming!

Tomorrow’s EntrepreneursDo you want to run your own small business…be your own boss…have a great idea…make lots of money? These are the seeds of entrepreneurship. Using a curriculum developed specifically or youth, Tomorrow’s Entrepreneurs will allow you to bring your business idea to fruition while demonstrating that entrepreneurship is a career option throughout your lifetime. You’ll learn how to determine your customer base, conduct market research, analyze your competition, design an advertising campaign and understand basic business finances. At the end of the camp, you will create a presentation to sell your idea to local business people.

Veterinary Technologist-in-Training
Veterinary Technologist-in-TrainingHave you ever dreamed of becoming a veterinarian? Come spend the week in an actual Veterinary training facility. As veterinary technology students-in-training, learn behindthe-scenes biology and chemistry basics of veterinary medicine. Master laboratory skills by creating slides from various blood samples, use microscopes to analyze bacteria and examine epithelial cells, spermatozoa and muscle cells. The highlight of the week will be learning proper dissecting techniques on your own fetal pig!
