Placement (COMPASS)

Placement testing helps you know where to begin your college studies. Testing is required in English, reading and math for most students and must be completed prior to enrollment.

Not sure if you need placement testing? Fill out the online Testing Survey to find out if you need any kind of testing.

If you do need testing, follow this guide:

  1. Submit an application for admission several days before testing. To submit an application, go to the Online Application to Apply.
  2. Study the sample questions at http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html
  3. Refresh your skills.
  4. If you have taken the ACT test, bring an official copy of your scores to the Admissions Office or have it sent to our student data center:

  5. If you have earned college credit, send that college transcript to the address above and take a copy to advising for review.
  6. Know your social security and student ID number. A photo and state ID are also required.
  7. Get plenty of sleep the night before the test.
  8. Allow at least two hours to take the test.
  9. Personal calculators are allowed. For a list of calculators that are not allowed, please visit www.act.org. Items Not allowed: Pocket organizers, handheld or laptop computers, electronic writing pads or pen-input devices
  10. TAKE THIS TEST SERIOUSLY, it will determine what classes are right for you. You don't want to take classes you don't need.
  11. If a compass re-test is determined to be the best option, the re-test fee is $25, for one or all parts of the test. This fee is payable to the business or cashier's office on the campus before you re-take the test.

MCC-Blue River
Walk in: Monday - Thursday: 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Some Fridays: 9:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m.

MCC-Business & Technology
Walk in: Monday - Fri: 8:00 a.m - 2:00 p.m.

MCC-Longview
Walk in: Mon., Tues., Thurs., Fri. 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Afternoon Hours: Mon., Tues., Thurs. 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
No placement testing on Wednesday.

MCC-Maple Woods
Walk in: Mon. - Thurs. 8:30 a.m. - 3:30 p.m.
Friday: 8:30 a.m. - 1:00 p.m.

MCC-Penn Valley
Walk in: Monday - Friday: 9:00 a.m. - 11:00 a.m.
Monday - Thursday: 2:00 p.m. - 4:00 p.m.
