60 Student access computers are available for research purposes. Some are also equipped with Microsoft Word, PowerPoint and DVD players and may be used
to complete library research projects.
The open Lab in the BU building provides computers for recreational use such as chat rooms and e-mail. Library computers are not intended for recreational use and students are required to follow the college Acceptable Use Policy.
A wireless high-speed Internet connection is available to students in the library. Students will need a personal laptop with wireless capability.
More than thirty databases on a variety of subjects are available to be accessed either in the library or from remote locations. These electronic databases include full-text articles, and abstracting and indexing from thousands of journals and newspapers. More than 1,400 web-sites have been selected and cataloged into easy subject categories and may be searched from the library homepage under Web Links.
Many Longview Community College faculty members place items on reserve in the library. The faculty members designate the loan periods and use restrictions; some may be for library use only. Faculty members follow copyright laws when placing items on reserves. Reserve items may include supplemental readings as well as videotapes. Videotape players are available for use in the library. Reserve items are listed in the online library catalog. A current library card is necessary to use reserve materials. Contact Judy Rice at (816)604.2278 for more information.
Print resources from the other Metropolitan Community College libraries are available through the WILO (Western InterLibrary Organization) online catalog.
WILO is part of the MOBIUS consortium of Missouri academic libraries.
Any current MCC student or employee may request library materials directly through either the WILO or the MOBIUS sites.
Interlibrary loan requests for books not found in the MCC, WILO or MOBIUS catalogs may be placed through the Longview Library Interlibrary loan desk.
Contact the interlibrary loan desk (816)604.2243, for more information.

The collection development mission of the Longview Community College ("LC") Library is to serve the Longview academic community:
by supplying access to resources that support the college curriculum
by encouraging the intellectual development of students and faculty
by motivating students to acquire reading, research and life-long learning skills
by assisting faculty in maintaining awareness of current information resources and information literacy skills
Longview College Library relies upon librarians, library staff and classroom faculty for purchase recommendations. The full-time reference librarian and the library director have final responsibility for collection-related decisions and they coordinate the selection process. All library users and library staff, regardless of status, are invited to make purchase recommendations to the full-time reference librarian and/or library director.
Materials will be de-selected from the LC Library collection on an on-going basis. De-selection should follow the collection development mission. Librarians may seek advice and guidance from
teaching faculty, if necessary, as to how to better serve students' needs. The following criteria will be considered when de-selecting material:
The library director will make decisions on the acceptance of gifts. Gifts will be added to the collection under the same conditions as material purchases and with the understanding that no conditions apply to them. The library director will decide whether the gifts shall be added to the collection, disposed of, or offered to another library or agency. Items will be returned to the donor if they are not appropriate for the collection if the donor prefers that the items not be disposed or offered to another library or agency. The library will provide a letter of acknowledgement for gifts, but will not provide any value estimation.
The Library maintains control of its material budget and does not assign annual allocations to subject areas or academic divisions. This is done so that the library can maintain the necessary flexibility to meet unanticipated demands and to take advantage of economical purchase opportunities.
It is the Library's responsibility to provide for the free exchange of ideas and to balance various points of view, regardless of the popularity of those viewpoints, or of the religion,
political philosophy, gender, sexual orientation, or national origin of the authors. The library follows the MOREnet policy for access to electronic resources. The library endorses the
American Library Association Library Bill of Rights.
Patrons with a concern about an item in the collection should be referred to the library director, who will ask for the complaint to be submitted in writing. A committee will review the
complaint and the materials in question, make a recommendation to retain or withdraw the item and send a written response to the complainant.
Longview Community College Library's first priority is to provide materials to students in support of curriculum requirements. Materials recommended for undergraduates will receive first priority for purchase. Second, the library serves faculty research needs by purchasing more advanced materials when funds are available, or by obtaining them through interlibrary loan. Third, leisure reading and recreational materials normally available from a public library are purchased as funds permit.
Longview Community College Library complies fully with all of the provisions of the U.S. Copyright Law (17 U.S.C.) and its amendments. The library supports the Fair Use section of the Copyright Law (17 U.S.C. 107) which permits and protects citizens' rights to reproduce and make other uses of copyrighted works for the purposes of teaching, scholarships and research.
Since the library makes no effort to collect at the research level, and usually does not provide materials to support faculty and staff pursuing advanced degrees, interlibrary loan and document delivery will be utilized to provide materials outside the scope of the library's collection.
Computer users are required to follow the MCC college use guidelines and the Morenet acceptable use policy. Computers are for research and course assignment use.
Copy machines are provided for the purpose of copying items that are Library Use Only as well as other material. Cost is $.10 page.
As institutions of higher education, the Metropolitan Community Colleges attempt to provide environments, which promote learning for the students that are served. The library environment normally is not an appropriate place for children. Library staff may request that children be removed from the library, if necessary. Leaving your child unsupervised in the library while you are in class could place your child at risk. Therefore, students are prohibited from leaving a child unattended. Unattended children will be reported to the security office and the parent/guardian responsible could face disciplinary action.
Classrooms, labs, and areas designated for studying should be free of distractions. Therefore, the use of cellular telephones, pagers or audible signaling devices in such areas is not allowed.
No food or drinks are allowed in the library. An exception is made for water in a container with a lid. Please confine all other eating and drinking to the designated areas in other campus buildings or outside of the library.
All campus buildings are smoke free. There is to be no smoking or use of chewing tobacco by students, employees or visitors in any building including the library.
