What do people in this career do?
Land surveying provides data about the location, elevation, shape, contour, or gravitation of land or land features on or near the earth"s surface for engineering, mapmaking, mining, construction, and other purposes. This career involves precision thinking, working with definitive scientific concepts, math and working outdoors.
As a surveyor you will:
- plan surveys designed to establish base lines, elevations, and other geodetic measurements
- determine equipment to be used in collecting data from a specified area
- draft illustrations and charts of survey data using computer programs or conventional methods
- coordinate survey findings with engineers, architects, clients, and others concerned with the project
- establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments
- prepare charts and tables to record characteristics
