Strategies for Conferencing

  • Keep emphasis on revision rather than evaluation

  • Focus on specific areas of draft rather than trying to deal with the entire draft

  • Establish goals for precisely what can be accomplished during each conference

  • Establish time limit for each conference and apprise students of it ahead of time

  • Adhere to time limit and space conferences so you do not become too fatigued to give good feedback

  • Provide feedback to all writers, including competent writers

  • Practice mindfulness; demonstrate active listening skills

  • Read drafts before the conference so you are in a position to guide during the conference

  • During a class period, clarify with students the purpose and general agenda of your conferences to alleviate apprehensions

  • If feasible and desirable, use a class period to conference with small groups of students
