Goals of the Writing Intensive Program

  • To improve student learning by teaching students to use writing as a tool for learning course content

  • To provide students further opportunities to continue to develop their writing skills beyond the English curriculum

  • To better prepare students for the Writing Intensive experience they will encounter in the curriculum at the four-year schools to which they will transfer.

  • To better prepare students for the expectations about written communication skills they will encounter in the workplace.

  • To recognize the time and energy required of faculty to provide this experience and these opportunities within their courses.

  • To provide the necessary faculty support and required training to operate a course as “Writing Intensive.”

  • To meaningfully contribute in a theoretically sound and methodologically appropriate manner to the further assessment of student writing skills.
