Who takes the placement test?

    (1) Take the test if you've never attended college.

    (2) Take the test if your Placement Test or ACT scores are more than  2 years old.

    (3)  Take the test if you are an intermittent student and do not have a college transcript showing a grade of "C", or better in college-level English and Mathematics courses, and/or your g.p.a. is less than a 2.0.

    (4) Students whose native language is not English should contact the Applied Language Institute located at Penn Valley Community College, 3201 Southwest Traffic way, Kansas City, MO, Campus Center Building, Room 409, phone 816-759-4041, before taking the Placement Test.

How long will testing take?  Tests are not timed, so you can relax and do your best.  Please allow at least 2 hours for testing.

Why take a placement test?  Your Placement Test scores help you know where to start your college studies.  Whatever your score, we have a course that is appropriate for you.  There are NO failing scores!

Can I use my ACT scores in place of testing?  If you have taken the ACT in the last two years, you may be able to use the English Math, and Composite scores in place of testing.  If you have not submitted your ACT's to the Student Data Center, please bring an official copy of the score report when you come to test.

What if I already have some college credit?  Students with college level credit in English or Math with a grade of "C" or better, may not be required to take the Placement Test.  You will have to take the placement test if your g.p.a. is less than a 2.0.  If you have college credit from another institution, please send your transcript to the Student Data Center before testing.  If you are sending your transcript to the Student Data Center within two weeks before testing, you should also bring a copy with you when you come to test.

What is the Placement Test like?  Placement Testing will be administered with a computerized program called COMPASS.  COMPASS is user friendly and designed for individuals with little or no computer experience.  COMPASS is untimed, so you can relax!  What makes COMPASS unique is that it adapts to your abilities.  The COMPASS math test includes a variety of items from pre-algebra to advanced math problems.  The COMPASS writing test includes testing in grammar, punctuation, sentence structure as well as strategy, organization and style in effective writing.  The COMPASS reading test allows the student to highlight the main idea of a passage thereby measuring reading for comprehension and prior knowledge.

What if I fail the tests?  COMPASS is not a pass-fail test; it was developed to assist in college academic advising and course selection.  Your scores will indicate where your academic strengths and needs lie in relation to college-level work for your chosen major.  Should you require assistance in meeting academic challenges, our campuses offer courses in math, reading, study skills and English.

Do you have COMPASS sample questions available?  Yes.  You may stop by the Center and pick them up, or you may visit the following website:  http://www.act.org/compass/sample/index.html
