Frequently Asked Questions: |
|
1.
How do I apply to the Land Survey Program? |
|
First, if you have never been an MCC student,
you will need to apply to the college. (MCC
Application for Admission) The
application for admission must be filled out online and takes about 24 hours
to be recognized by our system after submission. Transcripts showing
any previous college credit should be ordered and sent to MCC.
If you have taken classes at MCC within the
last two years, your application and information should still be in the
system. If it has been longer than two years since any activity to
your account, you will need to fill out a new application.
If you have already earned a college degree,
make sure to indicate such on your application.

How do I start taking Land Survey courses? |
|
The first consideration to
beginning land survey courses is the math prerequisite. SRVY 135, Elementary
Surveying requires Math 105 - Algebra and Trigonometry for Land Surveyors,
or Math 120 - College Algebra AND Math 130 - Trigonometry. Students
without thes math prerequisite may make arrangements with the department
(816.672.2510) to take the Trigonometry placement test. (study topics
available)
Depending on your math
background, you may have to take a few semesters of math before being
eligible to take the SRVY courses.
The second consideration should be the
rotation of the land survey classes. Not all classes are offered every
semester and a student must have Elementary Surveying before they can enroll
in the other SRVY classes.

3.
Why is the math prerequisite so important? |
|
Although
much of the equipment used in land surveying in the field does calculations
automatically, it is important for students to know how to do the math
manually. SRVY 135 teaches students about land surveying from a “pen and
paper” standpoint. The success rate for students with weak math backgrounds
is low. Also, a strong math understanding is necessary for success in passing the LSIT exam. |
|
4.
How long does it take to complete the AAS in Land Surveying? |
|
The
majority of courses required for the AAS in Land Survey can be completed
within two years. However, because some of the SRVY courses rotate, there
is often a lag period before the last courses can be completed. See the course
rotation.

5.
What if I have been working in the land survey field for years? |
The student population in
our program consists mainly of those already in the field. They are
either trying to earn
the 12 hours of SRVY credit that it takes to qualify to sit for the LSIT
(Missouri) or they are pursuing the 60 hours required in Kansas. Even though many students have been surveying for years, we still
require either the math prerequisite or a satisfactory score on the
trigonometry placement test.

8. Can I take another SRVY course at the same time as I am taking SRVY 135? |
Occasionally, depending on
background, instructors will allow students to enroll in courses concurrently.
Instructor approval is required.
|
|
9. Can I test out of SRVY 135? |
This is called "Credit by
Exam". While this has been done,
and can be an option, there is an upfront fee of one half the price of the
traditional course. The exam is given pass/fail and it is comprehensive,
based on the curriculum of SRVY 135. Again, math skills are extremely
important. The fee for Credit by Exam is non-refundable.
