Summer 2018

We will be offering two special camps this year:

  • A two-week, daily musical performance camp featuring Disney's The Lion King, Jr. This camp, open to students who have completed 3rd-8th grade, will be staffed by Lee’s Summit West and Summit Theatre Group. Limited to 40 students.
  • The Youth Chorus of Kansas City will be offering 2018 Summer Sing, a week-long program that will introduce students to the group singing experience!

Due to popular demand, we have added some camps for younger ages, so don't miss those and more this summer!

Give a helping hand as a "Camp Buddy" this summer!

Join our Camp Crew and assist children in the hallway (restroom breaks, water fountain visits, etc.) during College for Kids camps. Each Camp Buddy will receive a $25 courtesy card toward an adult community education class (good through May 2019). Robotics using LEGO WeDo
Ages 7-9
Build and program robots in this introductory robotics class using the LEGO® WeDo® system. Learn basic programming skills, simple engineering concepts and the names of robot components. Work in small groups to complete several projects using tilt and motion sensors. This is a great way to prepare young robotics enthusiasts for our more advanced robotics programs.

Robotics using LEGO EV3

Ages 9-12
Build and program robots using the new LEGO® Mindstorms EV3 system! Learn about mechanical and software design, loops, conditional statements, and problem solving and teamwork skills. Work in small groups to program and build your robot. Control the robot to avoid obstacles, pick up and carry objects, and play sounds. Projects are structured so that students work in an open-ended, investigative environment while having fun. Rise to the challenge!

Make Your First Video Game

If you love playing video games, this is the camp for you! Make your first video game in this one-of-a-kind class that shows you the keys to designing your first 2D platformer game. Conceptualization, play experience, challenge levels, graphics, sounds and simple coding are just some of the concepts that we’ll explore. No prior experience necessary, just a desire to have fun. Student-created games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family. Games are only compatible on PC computers; Mac versions can be created after the program for a $15.00 conversion fee. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Kids Creative & Digital Photography
Ages 8-11
Do you want to be a photographer? Or just take better selfies? Learn the ins and outs of taking fantastic digital photos. Analyze and experiment with photographic techniques through crafts made in class. You’ll learn basics like how to hold and aim a camera as well as how to frame the subject. Then enhance your skills while understanding focal points, background assessments, the famous rule of thirds, depth of field and freezing movement through hands-on learning. Discover how light and exposure affects photos through creative crafts like lava lamps. Rhythm and repetition will be considered while playing games and activities. Bring your own digital camera and let your imagination run wild!

Kids Photoshop
Ages 8-11
Learn to use the powerful tools and capabilities of Photoshop Elements. Create cool effects including skin smoothing, eye color changes and filter effects (think Instagram) and, overall, make your snapshots look professional! Prepare pictures for Facebook and blogs, make collages, add text and more. Basics like black and white, sepia and spot color will also be discussed. Everything you need to know to take a picture from “just okay” to “fantastic!” Bring a 2G (or larger) USB flash drive to class.

3,2,1 Blastoff

Ages 7-12
This action-packed week will focus on rockets and the physics of rocket flight. After learning the model rocket safety code, campers will build several different types of rockets and participate in the launching of multiple different rockets during the week-long program. Children will be divided into three groups (altitude trackers, launch preparation and launchers) for all rocket launches and will get the opportunity to try all three roles. Children should pack a sack lunch and beverage (no peanut products, please).

Under the Sea

Catch a wave in this fun, ocean-themed camp! Each day we’ll learn about a different deep-sea creature through art and science activities. Lego Comics: Design Your Own Adventure
In this LEGO® adventure YOU are the star! Pick your favorite LEGO® genre or create an alternate universe to create a digital illustrated story. Whether you want to fight alongside Batman, be part of a Ninjago clan, hang with Ninja Turtles or go into space with the Bionicles, the only requirement is that you put yourself in the story! All students will end the class with a digital comic book that can be shared with friends and family on a password-protected website!

Comedy Camp
Introverts and extroverts welcome! This class puts all participants on equal footing. We use theater exercises and improvisation games like those seen on "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" to create a performance ensemble and produce true-to-life comedy (and sometimes drama) from thin air. Choral Camp

For students entering 3rd through 9th grades

Join the Youth Chorus of Kansas City for their 2018 'Summer Sing!’ at MCC-Longview

The 2018 Summer Sing is a week-long program that will introduce students to the group singing experience! Join us this summer to sing, learn and grow with a community of students throughout Kansas City in an environment that is fun, safe and challenging!

The YCKC is an exciting new children’s choir open to singers ages 9-14 (entering 3rd through 9th grades) that provides students with the opportunity to pursue excellence through outstanding performance, to grow their skills and abilities and to become leaders in their respective schools.

Founded by veteran educator, director and composer Ryan Main, the Youth Chorus of Kansas City serves ambitious and diverse singers from throughout the Kansas City area. No prior musical experience or training is necessary. Students will learn about singing technique and teamwork, and will be provided with a T-shirt, daily snacks, sheet music and practice tracks.

Beginning Sewing

Ages 10-16
If the thought of making your own clothes or room decorations intrigues you, this is the class for you. Learn the basics of a sewing machine and how to read a pattern. Students will make one garment (choice of a skirt or pajama pants) and a pillowcase. After learning these basics, your only limitation is your imagination! A personal sewing machine is not required for this class, but if you have one you would like to use, please inform us when enrolling. Machine must be in good working order. There are a limited number of sewing machines available on a first-come-first-served basis. A supply list will be sent after enrollment. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Ages 10-16
Do you have creativity running through your veins? Are you obsessed with “pinning”? Join us for four fun-filled, creative days of projects all inspired by Pinterest. Musical Performance Camp: Disney’s The Lion King Jr.
Open to those who have completed 3rd-8th grade. Limited to 40 students.

Do you love to perform? Love to sing and act? Do you want to learn more about performing on stage? Have stage experience? New to the stage? Then, this camp is for you! Staffed by Lee’s Summit West & Summit Theatre Group, campers will spend two weeks working on the musical Disney’s The Lion King Jr. for performance at the end of camp. Camp time will be spent learning songs, choreography and blocking, as well as working behind the scenes on props and set design. Campers will also learn about being a good performer, stage presence and improved confidence along with other theatrical skills. All kids are welcome—experienced performers and kids new to theatre alike!

About Disney’s The Lion King Jr.: The African savannah comes to life on stage with Simba, Rafiki, Timon, Pumbaa and an unforgettable cast of characters as they journey from Pride Rock to the jungle—and back again in this inspiring, coming-of-age tale. With fun costumes and familiar songs, campers are sure to have a great time!

This is a two-week daily camp; attendance for both weeks is required. Campers may be responsible for partial costumes upon director request. Campers will perform Disney’s The Lion King Jr. on Friday, June 29 matinee and evening. An extra rehearsal is scheduled for Thursday, June 28 from 4:00-9:00 pm after camp.

Teens Creative & Digital Photography

Ages 12-15
Have people told you that you should be a photographer? Are you the one that always pulls out the camera at family events? Let’s learn how to do it right. In this class we explore using your camera in a creative way—pushing the normal limits of typical photography. We spend time working one on one exploring each individual camera and the limitations it has. We will go over the basics then delve into the world of shooting manually to break the barriers that come with the programmed modes. Students will gain more if they have a digital SLR camera with a manual mode.

Beginning Quilting/T-Shirt Quilts

Ages 10-16
If you have basic knowledge of a sewing machine and can sew a straight line, you can make your own quilt! For this class, you will choose to make a t-shirt quilt or ONE of two different quilt designs. If you choose to make a t-shirt quilt, gather nine graphic t-shirts to create your keepsake. We will cut up the shirts, sew on additional cotton fabrics and create a colorful lap quilt all in one week. For all projects, a supply list will be sent after enrollment. Basic Horsemanship

Join us for the most fun camp ever! We want to create memories for aspiring equestrians, build skills for current riders and instill a love and respect of animals. Riders will learn to be responsible for the horse they ride during each of their lessons. They will learn to properly groom, tack and feed. We offer demonstrations and discussions on horse health as well as anatomy, nutrition, conformation and the responsibilities of horse ownership. Riders should wear long pants and closed-toe boots with heels.

Clues, Crimes & Culprits

Ages 4-7
OH NO! The Mad Science monkey is missing! Will you help us figure out where the monkey is? How he got out? And, what he is up to? Join the Mad Science crew as we gather the evidence from the crime scene and take it back to the lab to analyze it. As the week goes on we will use chemistry, forensics science, physics and biology to solve the crime. Blood typing, DNA examination and pH testing are only a few of the scientific tests our young sleuths will get to participate in. Each Jr. Mad Scientist will get a lab coat, magnifying glass and a case notebook to keep at the end of the week.

Virtual Reality: The Future is Now
Ages 8-11
Embark on an EPIC adventure in virtual reality! In this cutting-edge class, you will learn the foundations of VR design by creating your own virtual worlds, exploring simulated environments and crafting memorable 3D experiences. At the end of the week, take home your first cardboard VR headset to show friends and family the new worlds you created. VR projects can be viewed on a website or a mobile device. Students do not need a mobile device to take the class, but to use the VR headset at home, a camper will need access to an Android or Apple mobile device. Students will work in pairs or teams, and VR Games will be available on a password-protected Black Rocket website to share with friends and family.

Checkmate Challenge Lego
® Camp
Ages 5-16
Strategy and tactical maneuvering are at the heart of playing chess. The Kansas City Chess Club certified staff will build those skills as well as showing kids basic engineering skills in building Lego® chess sets. There will be medals, chess books prizes and a Chess Camp t-shirt for all players! Fun for both girls and boys, all skill levels welcome. Boy Scouts can earn their Chess merit badge and Cub Scouts can earn their belt loop and pin while having fun!

Enchanted Academy Workshop
Ages 6-10
Be prepared to be whisked away to an enchanted academy where nothing is as it seems! Young artists will illustrate a beautiful graphic of the great dining hall and have fun in the not-so-ordinary life of the academy with cartoon drawings of an enchanted forest and a day at the races with dragons. On the final day of the Enchanted Academy Workshop, artists will use pastel chalks to create a whimsical drawing of a phoenix. No prior experience is needed. I Love Food! Drawing Workshop

Let’s get excited about the environment! The Outdoor Explorers camp introduces young children to basic environmental science through nature exploration, allowing children to progressively enrich their understanding of how living things grow and how they interact with the environment around them. During the course of each three-hour session, children will perform hands-on experiments, play themed games and enjoy a snack and story related to the theme for that day. Campers will create a mural during the week to illustrate their latest discoveries!

Explore the world of web-based (HTML5) mobile apps and customize your own game app! In addition to learning the basics of mobile app design and game development, you will also see firsthand how the world of app publishing functions. Student-created apps will be accessible on a private site and can be played on any mobile device or computer (publishing to app stores not included). No prior experience is necessary and students do not need to own a smartphone or tablet to take the class. Students will work in pairs or teams for most of the program.

Beginning Sewing
Ages 10-16
If the thought of making your own clothes or room decorations intrigues you, this is the class for you. Learn the basics of a sewing machine and how to read a pattern. Students will make one garment (choice of a skirt or pajama pants) and a pillowcase. After learning these basics, your only limitation is your imagination! A personal sewing machine is not required for this class, but if you have one you would like to use, please inform us when enrolling. Machine must be in good working order. There are a limited number of sewing machines available on a first-come-first-served basis. A supply list will be sent after enrollment. Class size is limited to 10 students.

Creative Contraption Warning! This is a camp designed by you—the Inventor! Each day you'll be given a series of challenges which must be overcome using basic materials, simple machines, tips from world famous inventors and the most important thing of all—your mind. With a little bit of ingenuity you'll construct catapults and forts and then lay siege, fabricate a winning egg-drop design, construct a dancing robot and assemble a working light saber to take home. While Thomas Edison said invention is 10% inspiration and 90% perspiration, this camp is 100% fun! Children should pack a sack lunch and beverage (no peanut products, please).

If you love the game Minecraft and have always wanted to design your own world, this class is for you! Learn how to create a custom map, the basics of creating 3D models using a new software to design your very own objects, how to build with Redstone and Command blocks, and create custom textures for you to import at home or share with friends. To access their project at home, students must own a PC/MAC version of Minecraft. Tablet, phone and game console versions of Minecraft are not compatible.
