Coding Specialist Program Student Success: Lauren Gordon
Lauren Gordon graduated from MCC in May with a coding specialist certificate and credits her thorough education to securing a great job before graduation.
Gordon had worked as a waitress and aspired to have a career in the medical field. She enrolled at MCC-Penn Valley in January 2018, attended classes in the evening, and took a few online classes throughout the program.
"I chose MCC because it's affordable, has locations throughout the city that were convenient for me and the online classes accommodated my busy schedule," Gordon said.
The Coding Certificate Program prepares students for the national Certified Professional Coder (CPC) exam. In the program, students not only learn how to properly assign diagnosis codes and procedure codes for both inpatients and outpatients, but they also learn anatomy and physiology, medical terminology, and medical billing.
Attending MCC was a positive experience for her, especially with instructors like Matthew Patterson who not only prepared students for the CPC exam but also worked with students to make sure they were well-trained for a career in medical coding.
"The teachers are always willing to work with you and make sure that you fully understand the subject matter," Gordon said. "They prepare you for real-life work situations and want you to succeed."
Patterson said, "Lauren entered the program with some medical office experience. Even before Gordon passed her CPC exam she was able to take the information she learned in class and apply it to her job. Many times this resolved outstanding billing issues that resulted in the medical office being reimbursed."
With her education from MCC and a certified professional coder certificate in hand, Gordon has hit the ground running and is now enjoying her new career at Wound Care Plus in Lee's Summit.
Congratulations to Lauren Gordon!
