What is the difference between an AA, AAS and a certificate?
Choose the Associate in Arts degree when you plan to transfer to a four-year institution.
- Covers the first two years of college work that you would get at a four-year college
- Gives a heardstart for a bachelor's in social work
- 42 credit hours of general education courses
- 17 credit hours of electives you can use for human services courses
Choose the Associate in Applied Science degree when you want in-depth study of a human
and do not plan to transfer.

Choose a certificate when you want specific human service knowledge and skills to
enter the job market

What is the advantage of an AA degree?
You'll earn general education course credit for transfer, of
course. You'll also learn a problem-solving
process (problem definition, assessment, interventions and
evaluation of self and practice) that comes from a liberal arts
foundation integrated into the core values of the social work
Can I transfer my credits anywhere?
Yes. Each college and university will review your transcript and evaluate which courses
which do not. In most cases, courses completed as a part of your AA degree will
be accepted as having met
the four-year institution's general education requirements. Most will accept up
to a maximum of 70 credit
hours. Check with MCC academic advisors or admission representatives at the four-year
In addition, MCC has agreements with the University of Central Missouri, Avila, Park
and Western Missouri
State Universities for transfer of all human services courses into Bachelor of
Social Work programs.
How does a certificate help my job prospects?
By showing evidence of training and education within a particular area, employers
will understand you have a
deeper level of familiarity with specific populations such as youth, substance
abuse or older persons. While
not a substitute for an associate's degree, a certificate can give you the edge
over others who do not have
such focused training.
What types of jobs can I get with an AAS?
You can find entry-level employment in youth service agencies, drug and alcohol treatment
program and other
social services programs. However, most employers in social services are looking
for people with at least a
bachelor's degree in one of the helping field.
Will a certificate give me the same salary and responsibilities as an associate's
No. An associate's degree shows a much larger commitment to your higher education
and therefore carries more weight.
I already have my associate's degree. What else do I need to transfer into social
work degree programs?
Congratulations! Your next step is to contact Avila, Central Missouri or Park Universities
and learn what it will
take to enter their Bachelor in Social Work program. Before then, you may want
to take advantage of lower MCC tuition
costs and enroll in elective human services courses that will transfer and give
you a running start on your BSW.
Do I need to take the drug/alcohol certificate if I am planning on getting state certified?
Our Certificate in Drug Addictions Services is not a requirement to become a state
certified substance abuse
counselor (CSAC). We offer many substance abuse and treatment courses that can
be used to help fulfill the
requirements for CSAC certification.
Can I use my practicum hours to count toward drug/alcohol certification?
Absolutely. Human services courses can count toward both the associate's degree and
Do I get paid for my practicum/internship?
No, but you do earn college credit and can list the internship on your resumé under

Will any of my practicum hours transfer over into another practicum requirement?
This varies from institution to institution. Check transfer agreements between MCC
