A Resource for Students

In the case of a Fire, Tornado, Hostile Intruder, or Medical Emergency occurring on campus, please follow the guidelines listed below:

Show all | Hide all

AEDs, CALL STATIONS, CAMPUS SHELTERS
FIRE • SMOKE • EXPLOSION
If you discover a fire and/or smoke or if you hear the audible alarm:
  1. Call 911 and report the location of the fire, smoke or explosion.
  2. Use a fire pull station to activate the fire alarm.
  3. Leave the building and encourage others to leave the building following the routes posted on the emergency maps
EVACUATE IMMEDIATELY
  1. Move away from the building at least 300 feet.
  2. Follow evacuation procedures
  3. Contact Public Safety and report the location of the fire, smoke and/or explosion.

EVACUATION

When an evacuation of a building is ordered, the evacuation will be done in a safe and orderly manner. All faculty, staff and students are to assemble in designated assembly areas as indicated on the posted emergency maps. Evacuation orders may be given for multiple purposes.

  1. Remain calm.
  2. When the fire alarm sounds, prepare to evacuate. Take necessary personal items (i.e. handbag, keys, coat, or medication).
  3. Do not panic but walk quickly to the closest emergency exit.
  4. Do not use elevators if evacuation is due to a fire alarm.
  5. Walk in single file to the right through corridors and stairwells.
  6. Avoid unnecessary talking and keep the lines moving.
  7. Provide assistance to others. Limit your assistance to reasonable acts as to not place your own safety in jeopardy.
  8. Individuals with disabilities requiring assistance in evacuation should proceed to stairwell Entrance areas (floor landings inside the stairwell) and wait for assistance.
  9. If smoke is encountered, drop to the floor and crawl along the wall to the nearest exit.
  10. When approaching a closed door, feel the door with the back of your hand. If the door is cool, carefully open the door and (if safe) proceed with the evacuation.
  11. No one is to return to the building until an "all clear" signal is given.
TORNADO PROCEDURES

Procedures to follow during a tornado: (Seek Shelter)

  1. Do not panic but move quickly to a designated shelter area.  If time does not permit you to reach the primary shelter area, seek shelter on the Lowest level of a building, away from windows and exterior doors.
  2. Once in a shelter area-Drop/Cover: Assume the tornado protection position by crouching down, protecting head/face with arms.
  3. Provide assistance to others. Limit your assistance to reasonable acts as to not place your own safety in jeopardy.
  4. Remain quiet so you can hear instructions from emergency personnel.
  5. Remain in your shelter area until an "all clear" signal is given.
ILLNESS & INJURY

Anytime an individual is injured or becomes ill, follow the procedures listed below:
If the injury/illness is serious or life threatening:

If the injury/illness is not life threatening, but does require prompt medical attention:

HOSTILE INTRUDER/LOCKDOWN

If a hostile intruder is discovered on the campus, the individual making the discovery should:

  • Contact Police at 911. Give the dispatcher the following information: your name, location of the incident (be as specific as possible), number of shooters (if known), along with clothing, height, weight, sex, other physical characteristics, direction of travel. If possible give a description of any weapons.
  • Contact the Public Safety Office

A lockdown response is used when there is a dangerous situation on campus.

Examples: Violent or potentially violent incident (s) by an angry or deranged person or persons threatening with a gun or other deadly weapon; robbery in progress, etc.

Every situation is considered unique and complex depending on numerous factors. For this reason, lockdown procedures vary from incident to incident and facility to facility.

In the event you are directly confronted by an armed individual:

  • Listen to what the individual has to say and speak in a clear, quiet voice.
  • Respect and do not crowd the intruder's personal space.
  • Never argue with an irrational or aggressive individual. If you are involved in a situation where someone has entered the area and started shooting, the following is a list of actions that are recommended:
  • If you can, exit the building immediately. Run away in a zigzag manner, not a straight line. Notify anyone you may encounter to exit the building immediately.
  • Once you have reached safety, call family or friends to assure them that you are safe and ask them NOT to come to the college. Additional traffic to the area may affect efforts to contain and respond to the emergency.
  • Do not sound the fire alarm. Persons may be placed in harms way when they are attempting to evacuate the building. Should the fire alarm sound, do not evacuate the building unless you have first hand knowledge that there is a fire in the building or you have been advised by Police/Public Safety to evacuate the building.
  • If you are in a classroom, office or other room with a door that locks - stay there and immediately close and/or secure all doors and close window blinds if possible. If the door to the classroom does not lock, barricade the doorway with furniture, etc. Turn off all lights and equipment and stay out of open areas. Consider persons with disabilities who may need assistance. Keep doors and windows closed until Public Safety and/or police officers arrive to give directions.
  • Be as quiet as possible, minimize your movement. And remain calm.
  • Do not approach the intruder or intervene in any ongoing crime.
  • If you encounter Police Officers inside a building, remember to obey all verbal commands, keep hands in plain view at all times, and do not make any sudden movement.
