HVAC and HVAC/R technicians install and maintain climate control systems. They work with mechanical, electrical and electronic components and the federal regulations that deal with heating and cooling equipment.

Average technician pay is $17 per hour (pay range $10 - $27 per hour). Experience, certification and skill level can impact pay level.

What is the job outlook?
Job prospects in HVAC and refrigeration are excellent. This field is expected to expand 18-26% by the year 2014. The growing focus on improving indoor air quality and the increasing use of refrigeration equipment add to your employment options.

How long does it take to get an HVAC/R certificate or degree?
There are three certification or degree options available through Metropolitan Community Colleges.

  • Job-Ready certificate -15 weeks
  • HVAC certificate - approximately 1 year
  • HVAC associate's degree - 2 years
