COMPASS FAQ's

If you are a new student, you must have an MCC application submitted before testing.

Who takes the placement test?

You do . . .
if you've never attended college, and are taking six or more credit hours, or. .
your ACT or placement test scores are more than three years old, or. . .
you are an intermittent student and do not have a college transcript showing a grade of "C" or better in college-level English and math courses.

NOTE: If your native language is not English, contact the Applied Language Institute at MCC-Penn Valley, 3201 Southwest Trafficway, Kansas City, MO, Campus Center, room 409, 816.604.4041, before taking the placement test.

How long will placement testing take?

Tests are not timed. Plan at least two hours.

Can I use my ACT scores in place of testing?

If you have taken the ACT in the last three years, you may be able to use the scores in place of testing. Bring a copy of them to the test. An MCC representative will determine if further testing is necessary.

What if I already have some college credit?

If you have college level credit in English or math with a grade of "C" or bette, you may not be required to take the placement test. If you have college credit from another institution, see an advisor before testing.

What is the placement test procedure?

The COMPASS computer program is user friendly even if you have little or no computer experience. The test is untimed and adapts to your abilities; questions increase in difficulty depending on your skill level.

The math test includes pre-algebra to advanced math problems. The writing test includes grammar, punctuation and sentence structure as well as strategy, organization and style in effective writing. The reading test asks you to highlight the main idea of a passage to measure comprehension and prior knowledge.

Sample questions are available at MCC libraries or you may go to: www.act.org/compass/sample

What if I fail the placement tests?

COMPASS is not a pass/fail test. The scores indicate strengths and needs. If you need help to meet academic challenges, our courses in math, reading, English and study skills will provide it.
