They teach in small classes - the average class size at MCC is 18. That means your instructor will know your name, so your education is personal.
MEET DIANA GRAHN, award winner, head of the humanities division, and for 25 years MCC-Longview English and film-as-literature teacher. She's also a biker.
If your stereotype of an English teacher is someone prim and old-fashioned, you haven't met Diana Grahn, MCC-Longview English and Film-as-Literature instructor.
In 2004, she won the prestigious Governor's Award for Excellence in Teaching - but it wasn't for stand-up-and-lecture teaching.
Says Grahn, "I'm a writing coach. My job is to take students wherever they are and help them grow. They may be anxious or not have a lot of skill. I tell them writing is a craft that can be learned. You learn to write by writing and re-writing."
Her students study all kinds of writing and authors. They are encouraged to look at issues and explore. For example, a paper on poverty may require visits to community organizations for research.
Your stereotype probably doesn't ride a motorcycle either. She owns a Harley Sportster with a customized paint job, lowered suspension and a souped-up carburetor.
Grahn has taught thousands of students from all backgrounds. "I've discovered a lot of hidden writers and it's very gratifying to see growth. I love to teach and I love my students. That's what keeps me here."
