Description

Land surveyors provide data about the location, elevation, shape, contour or gravitation of land or land features on or near the earth's surface for engineering, mapmaking, mining, construction and other purposes. They:

  • Establish official land, airspace and water boundaries
  • Write descriptions of land for deeds, leases and other legal documents
  • Take measurements of construction and mineral sites
  • Plan surveys to establish base lines, elevations and other geodetic measurements
  • Determine equipment to be used to collect data
  • Draft illustrations and charts of survey data
  • Coordinate survey findings with engineers, architects, clients
  • Establish fixed points for use in making maps, using geodetic and engineering instruments
  • Prepare charts and tables to record characteristics

In our program, you will be exposed to the equipment and techniques used in the surveying and mapping industry. We focus on the technical and legal aspect of land division and retracement, as well as advanced mapping science.

Choose from two degrees and a certificate program. Choose the A.A.S degree if you want a career as a land surveyor, Choose the A.E degree to transfer to a four-year institution to pursue a bachelor's degree in land surveying or mapping. Each state has different educational requirements for licensed land surveyors. our certificate provides the basic skills of surveying-related professionals.

JCCC Students

MCC and JCCC have entered into a cooperative program allowing JCCC students (Johnson County, KS residents only) an opportunity to take MCC Land Surveying classes at in-district rates.

Enrollment procedures: Students must make application to and be accepted by both institutions. Final acceptance into the program will be determined on criteria established by the staff of the MCC Land Surveying program. Applicants will receive written notification to verify their acceptance.

Certifications

In Missouri, the AAS degree has been certified by the Missouri Board of Architects, Professional Engineers, Professional Land Surveyors and Landscape Architects. In Kansas, the AE degree has been certified by the Kansas State Board of Technical Professions as an acceptable program for the land survey intern exam.
